I was fascinated by George Francis Lee’s account of getting off the shampoo bandwagon (I tried the ‘no poo’ method – and it transformed my hair, 20 July). Or should I say his “confession”, as the social power of the shampoo message is strong enough to make most of us “no pooers” keep a low profile.

I’ve not used shampoo for at least five years. I rub my hair through in the shower every morning, and either towel or air-dry it. Every day is a now a good-hair day – mine is thick, glossy and easy to style, with a very slight waxy feel that comes with the natural oils that hair products are designed to strip away and then replace (badly). I would only shampoo my hair now if I swam through something nasty in the sea or if a bird crapped on me.
