Pope Leo follows papal tradition with Blue Mosque visit

Pope Leo XIV visited Istanbul’s iconic Blue Mosque on Saturday, echoing similar trips by past pontiffs. Previous papal visits to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, as it is officially known, signalled respect for Turkey’s Muslim majority. However, the visit drew backlash from a small nationalist minority, FRANCE 24’s Jasper Mortimer said, noting that only 40 protesters gathered in the city of 16 million.
